Homemade Greetings Cards
Make your own greetings cards, birthday cards and Christmas cards |
|
You can use any word-processing or desktop publishing software to make your greetings cards. These instructions are for MS Word, but the process is similar whichever software you use. The clue is that you will need to INSERT the photo into the document.

What to do
A5/A6 cards
- Start a new blank document
- Click on File then Insert/Picture/From File
- Find the photo you want to use - and then double click on it to insert it into the card
You might have to change the photo's 'layout' properties so you can move it freely.
The handles (little squares) that appear when you click on the photo should have turned white (they were probably black before you changed the layout properties)
-
You can resize the photo by clicking and dragging these handles (press the left mouse button, hold it down and move the mouse)]
-
You can reposition the photo by moving the mouse until you can see a four headed arrow and then clicking and dragging
-
For an A5/A6 card you want the photo to occupy the top right-hand quarter of the page
Print your work onto a plain sheet of paper until you have the photo positioned correctly. You don't want to waste precious cards.
A4/A5 cards As above, EXCEPT:

Adding Text
You can add a greeting on the front of your card, such as Happy Birthday, Happy Christmas. There are two easy ways doing this:
Using a text box
Usually the drawing toolbar is displayed at the bottom of your screen - if it isn't, click on the drawing icon in the top toolbar - this will turn the drawing toolbar on.
(If you’re not sure which of the icons is the drawing icon, use your mouse to point at each icon in turn on the toolbars. A legend will pop up to tell you what each icon does.)
- Click on the text box icon (on the drawing toolbar at the bottom of your screen)
- Move the mouse onto the screen and click and drag (hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse) to draw a box.
- Type in your text
- You can resize and move the textbox as you did for the picture
You can change the text box properties (fill colour, lines etc) by RIGHT clicking on the border of the text box and selecting ‘format textbox’ from the menu
Using WordArt
- If you want fancier text, use WordArt - also available from the drawing toolbar
- Click on the WordArt icon and follow the on-screen instructions
- Once finished, you can resize and move WordArt in the same way as the pictures
