Silver Surfers - what to expect from a computer class

How Silver Surfers can prepare themselves to start a computer course

The majority of the students who come on my computer courses are silver surfers - or wannabee surfers!  In fact, wanting to use the internet is the main reason why most people want to learn to use a computer.

But my older students have some common fears. Do these sound familiar?

1)  Will I find myself in a class full of younger people?

No.  The majority of people on beginner's computer classes are older.  Younger people have learnt at school or at work, so you will be in like-minded and good company.

2)  I learn more slowly - will I get left behind?

Ask that question before you start the course.  I make sure my students learn at their own pace and encourage them not to move ahead until they are ready.  This can be a problem if you are enrolling on an accredited course, where you have to complete all the modules so that the course provider can get funding.  Make sure that the course is right for you before enrolling.

And yes - we do learn more slowly as we get older.  But, as I say to all my students, it's not a competition.  Learn what you want to learn at your own pace.  And don't get frustrated because you can't learn as quickly as you used to.  You'll be in good company, really.

3)  I was stupid/thick at school and I won't be able to learn

Remember - you are NOT going back to school.  In the intervening years you have probably raised a family, held down a job, managed the family finances and been a source of advice and support for many.  You are NOT thick or stupid.  You WANT to learn - otherwise you wouldn't be thinking of going on a course.  If you find the whole idea scary, see if you can find an introductory computer session or short course.  See if you can have a chat with the tutor before you start.  This will help put your mind at rest and reassure you that the tutor is friendly and human.  (We are - honestly.)
