Protect your computer from online threats for FREE

You can find a range of free antivirus software on the internet. These include AVG free, Avast, Avira Antivir, BitDefender, ClamWin. You can download these to help protect your computer from viruses, worms and trojans. Just be aware that most are free for personal use.  If you run a business you should use a paid for version. BitDefender is free for home office use. Comodo is free for personal and business use.

Download Avast here. Avast is available in a range of language options so most users should find a language they can understand wherever they live.  Avast has versions for Windows and Linux users.

Download AVG here . AVG free is only available in English.

Download the free version of Antivir here.

Download the free version of ClamWin here.

Donwload Comodo antivirus here. This is free for both home and commercial use.

Before you download any of these programs, make sure to check that they are compatible with your operating system. Also, look at the extra features offered by the paid for versions to ensure you get protection that is right for you.

Most of the free programs just offer protection from viruses, worms and trojans. If you use one of these programs you will also need to install antispyware protection.  You might also feel you need a firewall and and antispam protection.  Using a paid for internet security suite will probably provide you with all these items in one package.

Many of the major antivirus providers also offer a free online virus scan. These will scan your computer and remove any infections they find. This can be a useful tool in case of emergency - if you think you have a virus, your antivirus has software has stopped working or if your subscription has expired. These online scanners are not resident on your computer so never rely on them for ongoing protection.

And finally - better safe than sorry. The most important part of your computer protection routine is to do your backups regularly, then if the worst happens at least you have a copy of your important documents, photos and emails.
